Prerequisites: No prerequisites. Our course will introduce students to contemporary American writing, as well as to the creative writing workshop format. They will develop a solid understanding of the people, ideas, and publications that make up this dynamic scene.

We are surrounded by stories—they're like air—yet writing compelling stories is requires work, craft, technique, and a hearty dose of bravery. Our course will introduce students to contemporary American writing, as well as to the creative writing workshop format. Perhaps counter-intuitively, Experimental Writing promotes the thoughtful consideration of all writing techniques--radical and conventional. Libraries and Study Centers Brown libraries and study centers are available for research, browsing, or quiet study throughout the summer. Putting Yourself Into Words one week explores the balance between self-expression and effective communication essential to writing powerful personal narratives, college admissions essays, and creative reflections. The capstone for the course will be a full piece of writing in a genre of each student's choosing, which they will revise and refine through the peer-editing process. Please Note: Registration is available for another section of this course. Students will dive into the elements of fiction writing: scene, character, dialogue, setting, language, time, and structure, for example.

Information about times and locations will be available during the Activities Fair each week. Prerequisites: A proven facility with the English language, including grammar, and some confidence as a writer.

The unifying theme throughout the course will be the question of what constitutes compelling writing: what separates a good story from a bad one, a realistic narrative from a ridiculous one, a moving poem from a dull one? The rigorous nature of the course, and its requirement that students read and write more attentively than they may have ever done before, will also strengthen their skills in perception, creativity, and critical thinking. By paying careful attention to language in readings, creative responses, and revisions, students will develop tools for close reading that under-gird the study of literature; these are the same skills that prepare students to craft expressive writing, whatever its genre. In her role at the Division of Pre-College and Summer Undergraduate Programs, she oversees and, in some cases, teaches the academic year and summer engineering class offerings, which occur both online and on campus. At Brown, Karen is the lead instructor for the fall Introduction to Engineering and Design course that all engineering undergraduate students take as part of their undergraduate curriculum. We'll look at what it means for something to be called a story, some different kinds of stories, and how they can be approached from a narrow angle while still giving an image of the whole.
